CNN Money, part of the CNN Network, broadcasted a mini-documentary last week about the life of a few poker players from the US after Black Friday. According to CNN Money a whopping 8% of all US online poker players earned their monthly income through poker before Black Friday. After ‘Judgment Day’ this number obviously decreased big time and some players decided to start a new life abroad to continue their job as a poker pro.

One of the players followed by the CNN cameras is Shawn “jordankickz” Busse, who won a WSOP Bracelet in 2010. He won over $300,000 with poker, of which $60K is stuck on Full Tilt. He believes getting the money back will be difficult and when he ever sees the money back, he sees that as a nice bonus (it was recorded before the news of Groupe Tapie buying Full Tilt).

For many of you it would be a dream scenario: working in the world of (online) poker. Earning your money with something you love is a great thing. By the way: with ‘poker job’ we don’t mean working as a professional poker player, we actually mean having a real job in the poker industry .

But where to start? This poker job site is a great place to start your poker job search. There are articles on how to work in the poker industry, and jobs categorized by country, function and field.

Do mind that being good at poker is not a reason to hire you per se. It is definitely an advantage if you are a good poker player yourself for the function of say, a poker room manager, but it’s not the biggest skill needed. Experience as a manager for example, is much more important.

Having said that, having a passion in what you do is always good and with a poker job it is no different. Here are some examples of poker jobs:

-Poker writer: There are 1000′s of websites about poker on the web, who all need content. If you can write this is a great opportunity.

-Affiliate Manager: You work for an online poker and work together with so called ‘affiliates’ – sites that bring players to a poker room for a fee –

-Dealer: In countries where casinos are allowed a well-paid job. Also enables you to learn lots about the game while working.

These are just a few of the most popular poker jobs. Browse around on the site we mentioned before to get more info. Also, follow them on Twitter to receive the latest poker job offerings in your Twitter stream.

Is age catching up to the godfather of poker? It’s too soon to draw this conclusion, but sure is that Doyle Brunson, perceived by many as the best poker player ever, takes a break till the World Series of Poker in May. Not so long ago he told in his blog about his downswing in the Big Game (cash game in the Bellagio casino), but travelling and a dental surgery took its toll for the 76 year old poker player:

I’ve done a lot of traveling in the last few years and have always prided myself that it doesn’t have very much negative impact on me. But this last trip to London for five days and back has knocked me to my knees. Talk about jet lag! I’ve literally been in bed over half the time for the past six days. I feel like a truck has run over me. I’ve got all sorts of meetings the next few days so hopefully I’ll feel better soon.”

and:

“I’m supposed to play in the Premier League tournament that is being filmed at the M Casino here in Vegas. It is the most widely watched TV show in Europe, with a $100,000 buy-in. That would be great exposure for DoylesRoom but there is no way I’ll be 100% recovered from all that dental surgery so I’ll have to cancel.”

Brunson will also probably miss the L.A. Poker Classic, the new NAPT and NBC’s National Heads-Up Championship. We wish Doyle all the best and we hope he will be fully recovered for the WSOP.

Joe Hachem

By Kleftidis

Originally from Lebanon, Joe Hachem moved to Australia in the 1970’s and built a career as a chiropractor. Unfortunately, he developed a medical condition that affected the blood vessels in his hands, making it hard for him to continue with the physical demands of his job. It turned out to be a blessing in disguise however, as it left Joe with more time to play poker.

Having played casually for many years, Joe began entering live tournaments at the famous Crown Casino in Melbourne, around the year 2000. After a few years of small but consistent cash finishes, Joe headed to Las Vegas for the 2005 World Series, a trip that would change his life forever. He made a good start, finishing just short of the final table in the $1,000 No Limit Hold’em event, cashing for over $25,000 with a 10th place finish. A few days after, Joe would get to live out ever poker player’s dream. A field of over 5,000 players entered the Main Event that year, all hoping to take down what was set to be the biggest prize pool yet. After days of gruelling action, it was Joe who would emerge as the new world champion, taking home the gold bracelet and $7,500,000 in prize money.

Proving that his World Series success was far from a fluke, Joe has had a phenomenal amount of success since. He returned to the WSOP* in 2006 and came close to winning another bracelet, finishing 2nd in the $2,500 Shorthanded Hold’em event. He also finished 4th in the $2,500 Pot Limit Hold’em event for a further $90,482. Joe rounded off the year with a massive victory at the WPT Five Diamond World Poker Classic, earning $2,207,575 for his 1st place finish. In April 2008, he almost made the final table of the PokerStars.com EPT Monte Carlo Grand Final, taking away over $150,000 for finishing in 11th place. When he does take a break from poker, Joe enjoys spending time with his wife and four kids. He’s also become a keen golfer, regularly hitting the greens with friends and fellow poker players.

In the space of just a few years, Joe has gone from amateur player to now being one of the biggest tournament earners of all time. Far from a one hit wonder, his World Series victory was just a taste of what was to come from Australia’s favourite poker export. Joe is a member of Team PokerStars Pro and plays online using the screen name ‘JoeHachem’.
